Opening Song: I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus - BOTH VERSES (PCS #78)

Lesson:

In the Bible we learn that Jesus often visited the sick.  One story, found in Luke chapter 5 tells of a time when Christ raised a girl from the dead.

A 12-year-old girl lay in her bed, growing sicker and sicker. Her parents watched helplessly. They could do nothing to save her. Then they remembered amazing stories they had heard about a man living among them named Jesus. People said He could heal the sick and make blind people see. Maybe He could save their daughter’s life!

The girl’s father, Jairus, ran to find Jesus. He begged Jesus to heal his daughter. Then a messenger came with terrible news. It was too late. The girl had already died. “Be not afraid,” Jesus said to Jairus, “only believe” (Mark 5:36).

When Jesus and Jairus arrived at Jairus’s house, they went into the room where the girl was lying. Jesus took the girl by the hand and told her to arise.

When she stood up, her parents were amazed. Jesus had brought their daughter back to life! That day Jesus showed how much He cared for the girl and her family by taking the time to go and visit them.

We can be like Jesus and visit the sick.  We may not be able to heal them physically, but we can make them feel better by visiting with them.  Sick people often spend a lot of time in bed, away from pother people. That can make them feel lonely.  A visit makes them know we care about them and takes away their loneliness. You have the power to help them feel better!

There are a few things to remember when you visit the sick:
1. Let them talk more than you talk.
2. Always visit with a smile and a happy attitude.
3. Don't stay too long.
4. Leave them with an uplifting message or a prayer.

This week our family is going to take the opportunity to be more like the Savior by Visiting the Sick. We will bless others by lightening their burden and also fill our own hearts with the spirit!

The Latter-day Prophet, Harold B. Lee, said: “The greatest miracles I see today are not necessarily the healing of sick bodies, but the … healing of sick souls, those who are sick in soul and spirit and are downhearted and distraught...We are reaching out to all such, because they are precious in the sight of the Lord, and we want no one to feel that they are forgotten.”

(Plan a visit to a local nursing home, to visit an ill ward member, a friend who is ill, or to donate new coloring books to a children's hospital.  Make sure to plan a specifi date and time and put it on your calendar for this week.)

NOTE: If you are participating in the 2017 Light The World campaign the day for this prompt is Saturday, December 9th.

Bear your testimony about how important it is to visit the sick. You may share an experience from your own life when you were ill and how a visit from a friend made you feel.
