Opening Song: Faith (PCS #96)
(Attention Activity) Display a tricky puzzle you have or a difficult math problem. Ask the children to solve the puzzle. When they cannot solve it ask them what they would do to figure out how to solve it. (Ask someone who knows how to fix it for help).
- Have you ever had a problem that you didn't know how to solve?
Today we are going to learn about a Book of Mormon hero who had a problem he couldn't solve and read about how he got his answer.
Jared and his brother were righteous men who lived in a city called Babel. Most people were wicked. The Lord told the brother of Jared to gather his family and friends and journey northward. The Lord led them through the wilderness to the seashore, where they lived for four years.
While the Jaredites camped by the sea, the Lord chastised the brother of Jared for not praying. The brother of Jared realized how important it is to pray and ask the Lord for guidance. The brother of Jared repented, and the Lord forgave him.
The Lord told the brother of Jared to build barges to take his people to the promised land. After eight barges were finished, the brother of Jared realized the barges had two serious problems. There would be no fresh air and no light. Because the Brother of Jared had learned to pray, he decided to ask Heavenly Father how to solve those problems. He prayed and asked God for help.
The Lord told the brother of Jared to cut a hole in the top and the bottom of each barge. The holes could be opened to let air in and closed to keep water out. The Lord asked the brother of Jared to think of a way to have light inside the barges. The brother of Jared formed 16 small stones that were clear like glass. He asked the Lord to touch the stones so they would give light.
(show GAK 318)
The Lord touched each stone with His finger and gave them light. Because the Brother of Jared had such great faith he saw the Lord as he touched the stones. The brother of Jared took the stones and placed one in each end of the barges. They gave light to the Jaredites as they traveled to the promised land.
- Who can you ask for help if you have a problem you cannot solve?
If we ask the Lord for help He will answer our prayers. Sometimes he answers with a quiet whispering to our minds, sometimes we find our answers in the scriptures or the words of a Primary song and sometimes the Lord sends others to help us. No matter how He answers our prayers He will always find a way to answer them because we are His children and He loves us.
Bear your testimony about receiving guidance through prayer. Share a specific example of a time in your life when you had a problem and took it to the Lord in prayer. Share the answer you received.
