What You'll Need: scriptures, picture of Jesus Christ (or GAK 240: Jesus The Christ), map of the world or globe, photos of yourself or spouse on a mission, pass-along cards, printed mission call worksheet and pen/pencil, printed missionary tags.
Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 133:37 - And this gospel shall be preached unto every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.
Opening Song: I Hope They Call Me on a Mission (PCS #169)
Lesson:
(show GAK 240: Jesus The Christ)
- What makes you like about going to church?
- How does knowing about Jesus Christ makes us more happy?
There are people on the earth who don't know about Jesus Christ. They have never heard of him. They don't go to church and they don't know how to return to live with Heavenly Father.
Jesus Christ loves all the people on the earth. He wants everyone to know about his true Church. It makes him happy when missionaries are willing to teach the truth to people everywhere. That is why the Lord calls Missionaries.
Missionaries are special people called to teach others about Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the church. Heavenly Father has commanded all young men to serve missions when they are 19 years old. But girls can also go on missions and so can grandmas and grandpas.
(show world map or globe)
When you say you will serve a mission you don't get to pick where you go. You receive a mission call that tells you where Heavenly Father has called you to serve...it can be almost anywhere in the entire world and sometimes you have to learn to speak in a new language where you are going.
Missionaries You Know - if you or your spouse served a mission this is a great time to share stories from your mission experience. If not, ask the missionaries serving in your area to join you for FHE and share their experiences or call a relative and have them share. You may choose to go over the following points.
- Why did you decide to serve a mission?
- What did you feel when you got your call? (Point on the map to where you went)
- How did you feel when you first arrived in your mission?
- What did you learn while there?
- What were the blessings of missionary service in your life.
- Bear a short testimony in the language you spoke (if foreign speaking)
- Show pictures of yourself as a missionary.
We can share the gospel too - Invite the children to be missionaries during the coming week by telling someone about the gospel or giving them a pass along card (available in most church buildings). Bear your testimony about the joys and blessings of missionary service.
(For tips on sharing your testimony please click here.)
Activity: Choose from the following activities as they best suit your family.
1. Writing a Missionary a Letter
Write a letter to a missionary in your family or in your ward. Have children draw pictures, write encouraging words or create cards.
2. Mini Mission Calls
(INCLUDED IN LESSON DOWNLOAD) Have each child open a sealed envelope with a mini mission call. Print these on your home computer before hand. Use Google to help you fill in the blanks. You may also print up these Missionary Name Tags (INCLUDED IN LESSON DOWNLOAD). These come in three styles and print 10 to a page. You can print them onto card stock and laminate if you want them to last a while. If you want to add the name in white on a computer before printing, the font to use is called TOMOATO ROUND CONDENSED (download here).

Thank you so much for your time and creativity to put together these lessons. They really have strengthened our home making it so much more sweeter. I have shared your site with others because you can't keep this good of a thing to yourself 'cause that would just be selfish, ;0)

I just came across your blog and I love it! Thank you for all of your hard work getting all these FHE's together! They are amazing! My Kids loved this missionary FHE lesson. Especially the missionary badges! Thank you
Great lesson! I love, love the missionary tags. We had another family over for FHE and it was great to have such a wonderful lesson with them.
The kids loved hearing my husband bear his testimony in Spanish and try to hear words that sounded like familiar words to them.
Thank you! What a great website! This was an adorable lesson. My 4-year old was so excited to open her call all day!
Sharing this lesson tonight for an FHE swap at girls night. Thanks for providing these!
We just had our missionary Uncle leave on his mission, so I'm excited to share this with our kids! Thanks so much!!
I am impressed you took the time to put this blog together to help so many people. It looks like we may begin reading the Friend on other days of the week besides Monday night and use more in-depth, hands-on lessons thanks to your creativity. Thank you!
Pinterest directed me to your blog! Your efforts are greatly appreciated and will bless my family!! I will be using this lesson to kick-off my extended family's annual FHE theme in celebration of our oldest cousin missionary. It has elements for all ages! And, I never would have found the mission-call generator on my own :)
Thank you soo much , the ideas are soo great! Pinterest find!
Just to let you know you are not supposed to use the church logotype for your own personal use this way. It is especially not supposed to be published unless it is by the church. It is a cute idea, but should've been done another way.
Anonymous- where is this rule stated?
Good Question Emilie! I've read the handbook, it is online if you would like a copy. There is no such rule stated. I am sure that our Heavenly Father would be happy to see his children preparing to wear that special badge. Thank you to you for all of your effort in helping families grow closer to each other and our Heavenly Father too!
The rule is stated in 21.1.10 of Handbook 2 (2010).
I'm teaching my daughter's Primary class tomorrow and the manual says to "prepare a missionary name tag" to use in the lesson. Thanks for saving me the effort. The kids will love these! And, I appreciate that you hunted down the exact fonts. I'm picky like that. :)
I cannot get the link to make a missionary call. :( Tried googling it but can't find it either. Anyone know that website to print out a missionary call for my kids? I might just have to print them up myself... Thanks though for all your amazing lessons!!!
Thank you so much for all this. I'm using the missionary badges and calls for Activity Days. I think it will be great. You've saved me a lot of trouble. I'm excited to look through the rest of your blog.
This is perfect for our FHE tonight. Thanks for all your efforts!
Hi Thanks for this...We used your missionary tags in our General Conference Review Lesson of Elder Andersen's latest talk: http://beinglds.blogspot.com/2013/09/miracles-in-missionary-work-elder.html
Thank You for sharing .... I have adapted this lesson to fit for our Mutual Activity and I am sure that that youth will enjoy it :D ... Thank You again for sharing :D
I'm just wondering what the dimensions of the tags are?
The exact size if a REAL missionary tag.
I am trying to find out the font that was used for future missionary. I need to personalize them and wanted to add names and don't know what font you used. Can you share?
I love the name tags for my primary class! Thank you!
anyone know where i can get plastic name tags that already have pins on on them? where i can just slip the paper in?
Thank you for sharing your talents. These name tags are great for my CTR 4 class.
You can buy the plastic name tag sleeves at Office Max or Office Depot or Staples. And, of course, online.
Just to let you know, the stated rules from the Handbook are for commercial use only. If you use it for "non-commercial, church, home and family use" it is perfectly acceptable. Read the rule 21.1.12. In fact, part of our tithing money is used to develop all these materials we use, download and print out from the church. If this fine Sister Ahern is helping hundreds of us (maybe thousands) by doing it on her own I'm positive OUR church will not mind at all. She is incredibly helpful, thrifty and creative, which is the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She obviously loves her neighbors to let our families and classes have these resources for free. Please refrain from over-interpreting church rules. We are a church for ALL of mankind. She is not publishing any sacred things you would have to prove worthy for.
Thank you so much, Emilie, for showing charity for everyone. You are wonderful indeed.
While working on my missionary lesson this week I came across a reference to the October 1999 friend which says:
"Recently Church members have been counseled to not have children pretend to receive callings as full-time missionaries or wear pretend missionary name tags." This is under the Sharing Time section of the magazine.
Hi Emilie. Thank you for doing all the footwork for us. Especially grateful for your talent and love for your neighbors and share this with all of us. I'm teaching missionary lessons in Primary this week. I really want to create the mock missionary letters for them. That sounds so fun and would be fun for the kids to read at home with their parents. Could you please direct me to the correct site.
Thank you again.
Thank you so much for sharing your talents!! Lobe everything about this, and my kids will love and wear their badges with pride! Thanks again!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I love all of it! I am currently compiling a binder full of FHE lessons specifically to prepare my little future missionaries for full-time service. This was the first thing I clicked on when looking for a printable Future Missionary Tag. I love the layout of your lesson and think it will make an excellent introductory lesson for our "Mini MTC." Thank you for sharing your talents and being a true example of loving your neighbor!
