Year 01/Lesson 37: The Word of Wisdom

9.11.2010

What You'll Need: scriptures, gift bag, printed picture, a few healthy food items you have on hand, printed activities from end of lesson based on children's age.

Scripture: D&C 89:4 - I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation .

Opening Song: Choose the Right Way (PCS #160 )

Lesson:

Print picture of a person or beautiful painting on blank piece of paper. Put paper into a nicely wrapped box or a decorated gift bag. Show children the present. Then open it up. Show them the beautiful picture inside. Now take the picture and crumple it up and rip it in two. If children protest, ask why.

Why is it wrong to destroy or treat badly a gift that is given to you?

One of the great gifts we received when we came to earth was a physical body. It is so important that the Lord calls it a “temple of God.” (See 1 Cor. 3:17.) Because our bodies are holy, Heavenly Father wants us to take care of them. He knows that we can be happier, better people if we are healthy, and

Heavenly Father  knows that we face temptations to treat our bodies unwisely or take harmful things into them.  For this reason He has told us of things that are good for our health, and things that are harmful. Much of this information is found in Doctrine and Covenants 89 [D&C 89]. This revelation is called the Word of Wisdom.

The Word of Wisdom is a set of guidelines (or rules) about what we should and should not put into our bodies.

(Display a selection of healthy foods you have on hand)

Heavenly Father wants us to eat good foods that make us strong like vegetables, beans, a little meat, fruits, and grains such as wheat (bread and noodles) and rice.

We should not use things that could harm our bodies, such as tobacco (cigarettes), tea or coffee, wine and other alcoholic drinks. Recent prophets have also warned us not to use harmful drugs.

(Help the children understand that not all people who smoke; drink tea, coffee, or alcohol; or use drugs are bad. Some people do not even know that these things are bad for their bodies.)

If we live the Word of Wisdom, we can enjoy the Spirit of the Lord. If we mistreat our bodies we hurt ourselves not only physically but spiritually. We must obey the Word of Wisdom to be worthy to enter the temple and receive the special blessings that await us there.

- What can you do when someone offers you something unhealthy?

(Ask them about some specific items, such as cigarettes, drugs, or even too much candy. Help the children learn and practice ways to respond to such temptations.)

Heavenly Father has promised us great blessings if we treat our body right. He has said if we follow the Word of Wisdom we will be healthy and strong, gain spiritual knowledge and have a happier life.

Bear your testimony of the blessings of obeying the Word of Wisdom.

DUDE! This is awesome! I love the activities and the age-appropriate descriptions in this lesson, and especially the mention of too much candy. I could use a refresher in that area myself.
