Scripture: D&C 68:25 - “And again, inasmuch as parents have children… teach them…to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the Living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands…”

Opening Song: Love is Spoken Here (PCS #190 )

This month we have been learning about people who teach us about Heavenly Father and His plan for us. We learned about Prophets, both ancient and modern, and we learned about Jesus Christ teaching while He was on the earth. God has called these teachers to do a special job…to teach His children what is right and how they should live.

Heavenly Father has also called upon Mothers and Fathers to teach their children His will. Our family holds Family Home Evenings to make sure that we are teaching you the gospel in our home, like Heavenly Father wants us to do. Just like Moms and Dads are supposed to teach their children…it is the job of the children to listen to their Moms and Dads and learn from the lessons they give.

(Show children GAK Picture 321 – “Conversion of Alma the Younger”)

In the scriptures, we read a story about a Father named Alma and his son named Alma The Younger. Alma the Younger was making very bad choices. He was telling people there was no Jesus making fun of people who believed in Jesus. One day an angel appeared to him and told him to stop the bad things he was doing. Alma the Younger fell down when the Angel appeared and stayed asleep for three days and three nights.
While he was asleep her remembered all of the bad things he had been doing. He said, “And it came to pass that as I was thus racked with torment, while I was harrowed up by the memory of my many sins, behold, I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world.” (Alma 36:17)

He remembered the things his father had taught him while he was growing up and it helped him repent and believe in Jesus Christ again. We are teaching you the same things so that when you are older you will always remember the things we tell you about Jesus Christ and his Gospel.

Families can teach and learn from each other. This teaching and learning can happen when we listen to each other and love each other.

Bear your testimony about the blessings of teaching and learning within families and of Family Home Evening.

School starts tomorrow here and with the new school year I have a renewed goal to faithfully hold FHE each week. With 5 beautiful, energetic children and one more on the way any day now, its often hard to keep a good routine without making up every excuse to put it off. The summer has been long and lazy and aside from going to the pool "as a family" or getting ice cream every Monday we haven't really been that diligent with FHE. I stumbled upon your blog today and let me say I LOVE IT!! We started with today's lesson and it was perfect because it was about Teaching in the Home and a parents duty to teach. Our whole family got something great out of the lesson and I am just on cloud nine with how well the lesson went! Thanks so much for this blog! You were an answer to my prayers and we are going to start using this blog every week now for our lessons!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
